چکیده
Recent technological developments concerning Web 2.0 have enabled the use of three-dimensional virtual platforms for educational purposes. In this paper, focus is placed on the modifi cation of an OpenSimulator based 3D environment for its reuse in a different fi eld of medical education; developments are presented alongside the associated effort to reconstruct and repurpose this environment so as to fi t medical specialties of different clinical skills. The aim of this study was to present repurposing aspects of a learning environment modifi cation and adaption to the needs of various medical specialties, in an attempt to reuse – and therefore share – learning content between different medical areas. Initially, a 3-Dimensional environment was created using the OpenSim platform for use in cardiology. Then, the virtual environment was modifi ed so as to be oriented to the needs of psychiatry. The reconstruction of the educational environment and context and the reformation of the educational clinical scenario offer the possibility of reusability of this content which can be tailored to the needs of each medical fi eld. * Corresponding author; Address: Lab of Medical Informatics, P.O. Enabling Interoperability, Accessibility and Reusability of Virtual Patients across Europe - Design and Implementation
Virtual Patients (VPs) have successfully been integrated into medical and healthcare curricula for a number of years. Lack of time and resources is a frequently reported problem encountered when developing VPs for teaching and learning. Consequently there is a need for cross-institutional repositories of VPs. The aims of the study were two-fold: to enable interoperability between virtual patien...
متن کاملAn XML Standard for Virtual Patients: Exchanging Case-Based Simulations in Medical Education
Virtual Patients are computer-based simulations of a clinical encounter where the user plays the role of a healthcare provider while receiving in-context instruction. This unique pedagogical approach enables active case-based learning for learners. Academic institutions around the world have developed high-quality virtual patients using many different authoring and playback technologies. Howeve...
متن کاملA tool to enhance the sharing of digital health resources - The Healthcare LOM editor
Digital resource sharing is a contemporary trend in Medical Education. State-of-the-art digital resources are incrementally appearing in the majority of curriculums worldwide. Institutional repositories have been initiated and metadata descriptions of digital resources have been turned into standards, however sharing, retrieval and re-use across different institutions are still at infant stage,...

With their article, Grutters et al raise an important question: What do successful health technology assessments (HTAs) look like, and what is their real-world utility in decision-making? While many HTAs are published in peer-reviewed journals, many are considered proprietary and their attributes remain confidential, limiting researchers’ ability to answer these questio...

Recent proposals for re-defining the roles Africa’s health workforce are a continuation of the discussions that have been held since colonial times. The proposals have centred on basing the continent’s healthcare delivery on non-physician clinicians (NPCs) who can be quickly trained and widely distributed to treat majority of the common diseases. Whilst seemingly logical, the success of these p...
